The MISCAMPING Story

Thanks for visiting our website. Here is the story of how MISCAMPING was founded back in 2009... but the story starts five years earlier, when I talked Walt Michal's RV into becoming an official sponsor at Michigan International Speedway. 

It's a true story- and we hope that you can come be a part of our ongoing adventures in the Irish Hills of Brooklyn Michigan. 

In 2004, Andy Winnie decided to leave the Detroit radio business at 94.7 WCSX-FM and 101 WRIF-FM to start his own advertising agency, in Plymouth, MI. eBuyMedia Inc. was founded and one of his first and largest clients was Walt Michal RV, one of the biggest RV dealers in the Midwest. 

That same year, Winnie recommended to Walt Michal’s RV that they sponsor the brand new Turn 2 Retreat campground at Michigan International Speedway. 

Soon after, Walt Michal’s RV was the Official RV and Camping Sponsor at all 10 campgrounds surrounding the speedway. 

In 2006, Walt Michal’s rental manager quit and that is when Walt came to Andy and said, “Hey, you got me into this. Now you’ve got to take it over.” 

Winnie agreed, and added running the rental business at MIS to his workload. His efforts helped turn it into a true hospitality business, with 24/7 camping service throughout the NASCAR weeks. Sales were flourishing and the campgrounds were filled with happy campers from all over the US and Canada! 

In 2008-09, it seemed like the sky was falling for all types of businesses. The global financial crisis known as “The Great Recession” was in full swing. During a time when stocks were in free fall and big banks were failing, Winnie was contemplating his biggest gamble yet.

Among the many victims claimed by the downturn of 2008 was Walt Michals RV. The dealership abruptly closed it doors on Oct 28, 2008. And in March 2009, Andy learned that Walt Michals’ was in default with his MIS sponsorship and with the bank. He moved quickly to broker a deal with the Speedway and the bank before the June 2009 NASCAR race. Winnie reserved the internet domain, MISCAMPING.com, and prayed his gamble would pay off. 


“I remember it like it was yesterday. The banks weren’t loaning money to anyone. The stock market was down to 7000 points, my mom just passed away from cancer and I wanted to take over this business. I knew that things would turn around eventually.

My wife and my friends thought I was crazy. However, I loved camping, especially out here in Brooklyn, MI. It is a fun getaway from my normal job and I really enjoy taking care of the guests. So I went for it!” 
The risk and hard work has paid off. MISCAMPING is celebrating its 10th year in business. They are proud to continue offering customers a unique experience that combines the fun of camping -with no hassle. 

“We call it hassle-free camping.” Winnie said. “Customers just show up, enjoy their camping experience and then walk away.” 

RV rentals are delivered, set up, cleaned and ready for enjoyment. Customers arrive to the comfort of air conditioner running, the refrigerator already cold. All they have to do is have fun all weekend long. 

MISCAMPING’s hard working crew (a team; consisting mostly of Andy’s two sons & some of his closest friends) operates like a 24 hour concierge service for guests. Things like handling service requests, providing exclusive tours of the racetrack, along with garage tours, infield pub crawls, pace car rides around the track. As well as laps around the track in their famous 1979 Budweiser school bus! MISCAMPING offers a complimentary fire ring and daily firewood delivery to all RV rental guests. 

MISCAMPING & crew is excited to celebrate this special anniversary with all our NASCAR and Faster Horses fans! 

“Camping is what makes every event out here in the Irish Hills area special..” Winnie said. “We have 1400 acres out here with 8,800 campsites for NASCAR and nearly 12,000 sites for Faster Horses. This is Michigan’s Largest Campground by far. I’m proud to call this my summer home and my gamble has paid off.”
